NaNoWriMo Day 3: The Beauty of a Deadline

It’s the end of Day 3 and with a current total of 5,106 words, I am right on schedule. However, I’d like to take advantage of the weekend and get ahead!

It’s amazing what a deadline can do. Having a goal of 50,000 words and a deadline of November 30th is a huge motivator. So many times in the past few days, I wanted to stop writing. Multiple times I thought, “Well, I’ve written enough for today,” before I hit the daily goal of 1,666 words. And normally, that is where I would stop writing. If it were any other time, I would have stopped right at that moment when it started to get uncomfortable. I would have hit save, and closed the document feeling content with the 713 words I had written that day.

But during NaNoWriMo, 713 words in one day is not enough – 713 is not a number I would be happy with for one day’s work with a goal of 50,000 words looming in the not-so-distant future. So I continued to write. And made it to 1,200 words. This would normally be a satisfactory accomplishment, but not in November. So I continued to write until I hit 1,666 words and beyond.

I pushed myself further than I thought I could, all because of a deadline. Imagine how much I could write if I lived as though every month was National Novel Writing Month…
